CHAPTER FOUR

SAIRAH just started her shift but she’s already sleepy. And she’s been like this for almost a month now. If her bosses sees her like that, she’d definitely get fired.

For her bosses not to notice her, she stays in the comfort room and wash her face to at least lessen her sleepiness. Sometimes fell asleep there when she can no longer take it.

When she felt better, she went out of the comfort room only to see Sir Bray waiting for her outside.

“I just notice recently that you keep on coming back and forth in the comfort room and stays inside more than fifteen minutes. There should be a reason to that, right? Are you sick?

She shake her head. “N-no, Sir,” her heart felt like it’s about to jump out of her chest.

“Pregnant?

She felt cold after hearing her boss say the word pregnant. She was just focusing on making herself awake and not be caught that she forgot to think what could be other possible reasons of her getting sleepy apart from sleep deprivation.

“If you’re pregnant, I’m sorry but I will have to fire you.

“N-no, Sir. I’m not pregnant. I don’t even have a boyfriend,” she laughed awkwardly. “Ahm, h-honestly, Sir, I- ahm, I’ve been taking care of my father at the hospital in the morning. That’s why I only have few hours of sleep. But I know it’s not a valid reason for me to sleep at work. Please, Sir, don’t fire me. I really need this job.

Her mind is confused but she still manage to find a reason not to get fired. Though Bray is strict, he’s still considerate. Her sleepiness was gone but her mind is floating thinking that she could be pregnant. She’s aware that there are times a woman still gets pregnant even if she had only done it once. And there’s one way for her to know if she really is.

After her shift, she bought a pregnancy test kit. Good thing her younger brothers are already at school while her sister is in the hospital looking after their father.

Most of the time, if she’s nervous, she easily pissed. But now, she already drunk a liter of water but she’s still haven’t pee. She’s still nervously waiting when her phone rings. It’s her cousin, Jade, calling.

“Hey, how’s your new apartment?” he said in a cheerful tone.

For a while she had the chance to divert her attention to something else.

“It’s great. Thank you for letting us stay here for free, Jade.

“You already told me that a lot of times. We’re family, Sairah. If you have told me earlier what happened to your old house, you could have save more money than pay for the rent.

A year ago, she found out that her father mortgage their house. It got foreclosed and they had no choice but to leave and find a place to stay. For seven months, she managed to pay for rents but when her father’s condition worsen, she wasn’t able to pay for the last three months and about to get evicted. Having no other option, she called Jade for help. She was just hoping she could borrow money but he offered him one of his apartments for free.

After talking with Jade, like a cue, she felt like peeing.

“N-no, this can’t be real,” Sairah’s still in denial even after seeing two lines in the second pregnancy test kit that she bought that morning. “I can’t be pregnant,” tears starts welling in her eyes.

She’s not yet prepared to become a mother. She still have to take care of her younger siblings. She’s already working hard to send them to school and yet, it’s still not enough to provide them with all their needs. How much more if she decide to raise a baby? But it’s not like her conscience can take it too for her to decide to have abortion. There’s no way that’s going to happen. She can’t lose her baby nor her job.

“What do I do?

She knows her job is not good for her baby but for the meantime, she got no other choice but to work in the nightclub. That’s her only source of income to pay all their expenses. And even she wanted to rest since she easily feels tired lately, she just cant.

She feels guilty that even after finding out she’s pregnant, she haven’t visited a doctor yet to check on her baby. She just hope that everything she’s feeling wont affect the baby.

“Hey, you’re really pale, Sairah,” Alexa touching her forehead. “You don’t have a fever though. Are you hungry?

He shake her head and forced a smile. “I’m fine, Alexa,” she has to keep her condition as long as she possibly can.

After giving their customers’ orders, she went to the comfort room and starts vomiting. She left for work without eating anything because she just end up puking. But it seems like that didn’t help to make her feel better. She’s having cold sweat and feels so weak.

She wipe her sweat when she heard knocks on the door.

She took a deep breath. “I’m coming out,” she’s turning the knob when she lost it. She fainted.
